Wood Preservation Methods
The Biological research of wood and it’s renewable material is what is referred to as wood science. Wood technology is now the way the tools are utilized in the processes of wood preservation. Wood is treated as a material in direct comparison with other products. The wood is checked against the other materials properties, performances, value, and work-ability. The many Merits of timber and these technologies improve wood to be superior over other products. Some of these advantages include wood being a versatile material that can be used in a wide range of products. It is also based on renewable resources. Timber can be utilized in very many applications, and this makes it more valuable.
The good appearance of your timber made structure cannot be guaranteed if protection of the timber is not done. This protection is from moisture and insects which are the biggest threat to wood. The rotting and decay of the timber products are caused by the moisture and the insects. There are many ways timber is treated among them being the ACQ in other words alkaline copper Quaternary. This is a copper-based preservative that is applied to the wood for protection. Although being a good method to use for wood protection it has presents some few challenges. It is a highly corrosive chemical that affects most metals that are used together with the wooden products. The concentration of the chemical that will be used to treat a piece of wood will depend on the where it is going to be used and the molecular structure of the wood. The concentration level of the chemical will be different for two pieces of wood where one is used above ground and the other close to a water body.
The use of copper metal is another method of wood treatment that is fast being accepted. This method, unlike the ACQ, is friendly to the metal fasteners and its gaining popularity very fast. This process is what in other words called the micronized copper wood preservative. The copper metal is applied to the wood as small microscopic particles injected into the wood at high pressure. In other copper-based preservation methods copper is dissolved in chemicals while in this method copper is driven into the wood as a metal. The characteristics of the wood are highly improved and the when this process is used to treat wood. The time the wood products treated using this method last is longer other types of treatment.
Termites cannot eat through timber treated through this method. Unlike other methods of treatment this method is not corrosive. The wood treated using this method last longer and is stronger.
